The Liver Function Test (LFT) is a group of blood tests that measure different enzymes, proteins, and substances produced or processed by the liver. This test helps evaluate the liver’s health and detect liver damage or disease.
🧫 Common Components Tested:
ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase): Enzyme elevated in liver damage
AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase): Enzyme indicating liver or muscle damage
ALP (Alkaline Phosphatase): Enzyme elevated in bile duct obstruction or bone disease
Total Bilirubin: Measures bilirubin level, a waste product from red blood cells
Direct Bilirubin: Conjugated form processed by liver
Albumin: Major blood protein made by the liver
Total Protein: Measures overall protein in blood
GGT (Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase): Enzyme elevated in bile duct and liver diseases
To assess liver health and function
To diagnose liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or fatty liver
To monitor effects of medications on the liver
To investigate symptoms like jaundice, abdominal pain, or fatigue
Sample Required:
A blood sample
Fasting Required:
Fasting for 8–12 hours is often recommended for more accurate results.
Elevated ALT and AST: May indicate liver inflammation or damage
High ALP and GGT: Can suggest bile duct problems or liver disease
Abnormal Bilirubin levels: Indicate jaundice or liver dysfunction
Low Albumin: May suggest chronic liver disease or malnutrition
